Structure
3 February 2006Here’s a brief description of the structure of “Investing for a Secure Retirement.” It should help you navigate through the text and allow you to quickly find the information that you need.
ISR is divided into two main parts - 1) How Much Do I Need? and 2) How Do I Save and Invest To Achieve My Goal?
It’s important to have a goal before devising an investment strategy and plan. With all the advertising and promotion of mutual funds and other investment vehicles that we are exposed to, it is very common for people to begin their retirement planning by trying to decide which mutual fund to buy. This is a backwards approach. The first step in any plan should be to determine a goal - how much money do I want to have available at a certain date? This sections covers the following four main topics:
- Determining Retirement Financial Needs
- Vehicles for Retirement Savings
- Calculating How Much To Save For Retirement
- Monitoring Retirement Savings
Once you’ve established a goal, you will be much better prepared to use Part 2 of ISR to define and implement a strategy for long term investing. In this section, the following four main topics are discussed:
- Basic Asset Allocation
- Developing and Implementing Your Retirement Savings Portfolio
- Saving for Retirement
- Monitoring and Adjusting Your Retirement Savings Portfolio
As you read through the text, you will notice that ISR contains links to source material. I’ve included them so you can dig deeper into a particular subject material, if you want. I’ve also developed a links page that holds all of the links that are included in the entire text as a reference guide.
